DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE
6 sq. bitter chocolate 3⁄4 cup shortening
1 1⁄2 cup boiling water 3 cups sugar
3⁄4 cup sour milk or buttermilk
2 3⁄4 cup flour
1 1⁄2 tsp, baking soda 3⁄4 tsp. salt
3 small eggs
Place chocolate and shortening in bowl and pour the boiling water over this. Stir to dissolve then stir in sugar and sour milk. Sift flour and measure. Sift flour, soda and salt together. Add all at once to mixture in bowl. Stir just enough to mix ingredients. Add eggs to mixture one at a time. Pour into well greased pan. Bake 1 hour in 350° oven.
